PART 2

In 2025, I became a teacher and teaching children in a library that I own. That was my dream goal 10 years ago but it finally happened! My library runs by me and my aunt who was in New Zealand. The English library will have reading courses focused on storytelling for various ages and the aim will be accepting English through unstressful way. Also there are some nearly native English speaker teachers so they can help children pronunciation and advanced listening skills. I think it's important to listening proper standards English.
Children are often easily absorb, so it will be more good for them. Korean mothers will love that as well. Unfortunately though, in Korea, children do not have a lot of imagination , they ought to learn fixed learning curriculum like old fashioned way of teaching. so I will try hard for students to grow imagination through reading different kinds of books. My teaching courses will be storytelling. I will use colorful presentations that shows various stories for all age with a beam. Also, before starting the course, for adults class, I will use a dialogue circle and for children's class, I will use a fishbowl method. The storytelling will be presented with a book or an one play role by a teacher.
For adults classes, before classes, students and teacher will make a circle and will put what genres they want to study or read in a small box so everyone can be more interested in this course and will talk freely about whatever they want for maximum of 10 minutes for awakening the brain. This course will include making story-boards and tell stories to each others. I will use a computer lab in a library when making the story-board. It is really useful learning words and making sentences, depend on English skills the boards number will be six to twelve. The method is simple, students just have to pick six to twelve pictures that captured in a story and put three lines below pictures. After print them, write more than 4 key words in each picture for making sentences and storytelling.
For children classes, I will make special sign languages between students and them. When I talk to other teacher, child will hard to talk to me and am busy because of teaching other students, we will use the special sign language. Such as, a sign that 'I am going to have water or bathroom' then other students will not be interrupted. Also I really want to see that cute children's gestures.

week14 assignment

After when I saw my videos, I realized that my vocabularies were short so I think I have to read more English books so I can build up words. If people who I have to use English, not close with me, I get nervous to talk. So, I think, I can't show my English ability well. I am surely I have to work on that. The ways can be, More chatting with non-familiar people and  More watching Drama series that I like, and learn from them.

week13

I was surprised there are many creative methods of teaching, behavior managements and discipline I only knew few of them.
I will defenetely use dialogue circle because students usually donot want to tell their thoughts to parents and to teachers and they might donot know what their thoughts are so
with this activity, they will get many chances to think about themselves and if they know
thier friends are having similar thoughts, they would feel safe.
Also fishbowl is a really good method which I will use. The reason is eventhough some
donot understand the class, through this they will get an understanding with their language
in a discussion. Moreover, with this method, students will get a good understanding and thinking ailities.

Learning Call

Which sites and resources were of most/least interest as a language learner? Why?
BreakingNewsEnglish.com
It was the most interesting as a learner because this is a very great site to read English articles for learners who have tried to read BBC News and find stressful. This site provides simplied eath articles and exercises on articles. It is great for reading comprehension.

Lessons On American Presidents.com
It was the least interesting as a language learner because I even don't know my own country's presidents.

from shared resources

http://busyteacher.org/
Pets Corner - This word search
I will use this resource for elementary students in class for an activity. It is fun and also naturally helps to remember and see alphabets more carefully.
For me, when I was young it was the most fun thing and time-killing.

This short reading comprehension
This really does help students who cannot do reading comprehension well. Because this is a short story, students doesn't get pressure and if the story is interesting, students will get an enthusiasm to read and understand.

FOOD FOR THOUGHTS

The video is saying world is reforming public education for economic and cultural at the moment, in Korea, government is changing History with no clear reasons so people and students are really shocked and strongly against that. The reason is they said they will erase some of famous patriotic martyrs for democracy because they donot have enough evidence to prove them. I mean why now? Are they changing like Japan distorted history? We still have few people from that period and their descendants. I dont know what is going on with Korea.
Anyway, so I was surprised western also has the judgement on people's academic level, in Korea, this really is taking seriously that our university entrance rate is over 80 percent. People are just going to university because of increased standard. I saw an article about Korea's 수능 which is a national test for university entrance that someone took a 수능's English to Cambridge student in England and she said this is non-understandable and really hard. I felt really sorry for Korea. Like the video said schools are industry producing students.

Mid term exam

Self efficacy is the most applicable to my future English learning and teaching. The reason is I have learned that it really effects on people’s learning ability. For example, we all know that children are growing and learning by parents’ praises when learning a first language. If parents do not give compliments to their children, their learning will be slow and not survival so it is really important for human to have self efficacy. Moreover, many famous and influential people had a speech about self efficacy, they look in a mirror and says ‘You can do it’ or  ‘You are beautiful’ and give themselves positive thoughts everyday. To give an example, Albert Bandura who is famously known in social learning theory as a canadian psychologist said ‘Self-belief does not necessarily ensure success, but self-disbelief assuredly spawns failure.’ I always try to have positive mind but it is really hard when I have low self efficacy. In my learning experiences, when I was in primary school I do not have good memories with teachers when it comes to study or school test results in Korea because I was not good at study and teachers were always angry or praise only intelligent students that made me a very introvert child. My Korean teachers were not kind and also were very scary and so at that time, I was blaming myself for bad test results and why I can not study well. Because my home education environment was not really focusing on study so I did not know how to or why I should study. But this year as I have been learning about education in TESOL, my school memories and my parents’ parenting memories were keep popping up and naturally I compared to my experiences. Then I was realized that it was stupid to blame myself when I was a primary student. I do not understand why scary people are becoming teachers especially in kindergartens and elementary schools, I know some students need punishment for good study environment but teachers who do not give students self efficacy but only give low self-esteem must not be a teacher. The reason I wanted to be teacher was one of this bad experience, I wanted to be a teacher who is kind and looks like a person who listens well to students and not ignore, gives self efficacy to my own students. I do not mean that every teachers have to be only nice and angelic, I just do not want children are getting hurt by their own teacher who should be a mentor and a second parent. Many people are finding their own inspired or good teacher from graduate schools after they are grown up and I really envy that because I don’t have a teacher to visit. If I become a teacher, I really want to help students to have positive thinking and self efficacy.

I definitely interested in learning more about  motivation, self efficacy and reducing affective filter in classroom during the second half of the certificate program. I want to learn how to motivate and make students participate themselves. Because only few fixed students are always participate, I want to see all students are participating enjoyably in classroom. So that when students have to present a speech or give presentation, they will not get nervous and reduce presentation anxiety. Then through that students are slowly getting confident themselves. Also I want to learn how to encourage students’ different learning styles without bothering others.
In Korea, learning grammar is essential, so I want to know how to teach grammar easily, Korean students memorize grammar and this memorize method is not good because they can not use differently especially in speaking. So without this, I want to know  grammar teaching method.

Are you carrying cash right now?

Are you carrying cash right now? In modern days, the variety  of non-cash payment methods is increasing and people are getting used to those methods. I do not deny that because we are living in a technology era however people better pay in cash because it helps shopkeeper's income, vitalizes an economy and your income.

Shop owners have trouble of earning profits because of card fees. Big companies like E-marts and GS supermarket, secure other income subtract from sales profit . However, private businesses are focusing on one business so they have one way of income. Therefore, people using credit cards can be a big burden to shop owners. Also because of card fees, shop owners hate credit cards, they make cash payment sale reduction. For example, in massage shops, it became a natural thing that there are two separate prices; one is cash payment price which is cheaper than the other credit card payment price.

Paying in cash vitalizes an economy. There is a saying that ‘ Cash has to be circulated’. If you look at people’s wallets on streets now, I am sure they do not have cash but only credit cards or they even do not carry wallets. For me, because I hate paying a small fee with a credit card, naturally I look for a bigger market rather than going to a small shop near me. Moreover,  you can register the cash receipt system which is receiving an income tax deduction at year-end tax adjustment in Korea. This can be of help to your income especially for the family income if you are a housewife struggling to saving money.

On the other hand, some people argue that using cash does have few drawbacks. People could lose cash, and if they forget a wallet they would pay more to get it. Also carrying a wallet could be a bit of a nuisance and heavy. For instance, at a beach, we hardly see any wallet among people who wear few clothes and bring not much with them. Even, in the future or very soon there are many articles and cases about a human microchip implant which contains informations such as personal identification, medical history, medications, allergies, and contact information.

Changing people’s habit of payment is not easy especially when they know conveniences of paying with credit cards. However, paying in cash definitely has many advantages - supporting  an economy, your earnings  and shopkeepers’ revenue notably in open markets . People should start to think of the reasons and consider paying in cash. Taking the first step is always the hardest.

A reflection about the Week#4 discussion about Motivation

Before I saw Dan Pink: The Puzzle of motivation video, I thought extrinsic motivations have more effects of people's lives than intrinsic motivations. The reason is people will be surely happy with the real outcomes or real rewards in their hands. However I was really surprised when the video showed two reversal outcomes of an experiment called The Candle Problem. So the video said often carrots and punishments method  doesnot work that the carrots block the creavities.

When I am on my deathbed, I want to able to say that my life was unregretful, I fully enjoyed my life time, I freely colorfully lived my life.  I so envy when I see or read books or articles about people living nonpossessive life and just travel. I now know that those people are really brave and great. For just a year, I want to live like them.

What's Your Learning Style?

My Scores:
  • Auditory: 35%
  • Visual: 40%
  • Tactile: 25%
I am a Visual learner!

Visual

If you are a visual learner, you learn by reading or seeing pictures. You understand and remember things by sight. You can picture what you are learning in your head, and you learn best by using methods that are primarily visual. You like to see what you are learning.
As a visual learner, you are usually neat and clean. You often close your eyes to visualize or remember something, and you will find something to watch if you become bored. You may have difficulty with spoken directions and may be easily distracted by sounds. You are attracted to color and to spoken language (like stories) that is rich in imagery.
Here are some things that visual learners like you can do to learn better:
  • Sit near the front of the classroom. (It won't mean you're the teacher's pet!)
  • Have your eyesight checked on a regular basis.
  • Use flashcards to learn new words.
  • Try to visualize things that you hear or things that are read to you.
  • Write down key words, ideas, or instructions.
  • Draw pictures to help explain new concepts and then explain the pictures.
  • Color code things.
  • Avoid distractions during study times.
Remember that you need to see things, not just hear things, to learn well.

A Reflection on Week#3 discussions

I was amazed and interested after watching the video about the differences between Asians and Westeners thoughts and cultures of language. I think one of the big difference between them is Westerners have strong individualities whereas Asians are the opposite. Especially in Korea, there is a word 'Jung-정' which means attachment and we say ' You have a lot of Jung'. The other big difference is Asians do not have creativity like Westerners have. To support this, we believe it is a good culture that if parents set a path for offspring and they should follow that path. May be because of this, many Asians have a hard time thinking about their real future and what they want. Also, Westerners are more open minded so they do not have a bad prejudice about tattoo and we can see so many various and characteristics.
I hope good things between Asians and Westerners' culture and thoughts combine well in future.

What materials, tools, and/or sites have been most useful to you as a language learner?
For me, watching or listening the medias has been the most useful material to me as a language learner. I once heard that listening English 6 hours a day help English listening skill so I occionally listen to Arirang Radio. It is fun because the contents of this are various. They are suitable for young generations because some Korean celebrities appear on the radio. Also the hosts are bilingual, they teach new words and say same sentence twice in English and in Korea. It is really helpful.

Can you think of times when you learned language by the different historical approaches…
   - Grammar Translation Method?

At school, and Hak Wons, i learned so many grammars but i never remember them

    - Audiolingual?

I learned many dialogues in English classes at school.  First we heard conversations  then practice with partners.

- Communicative Language Teaching?

During study in university, i took several conversation classes that had CLT

Which have you experienced the most?

It's GTM that i have the most experienced but sadly i'm not good at grammar.

How will you balance these approaches as a teacher?

I will use grammar traslation method as lightly as possible like a game for example I will make matching games for sentences or idiom pharases that goes together so students can learn and aquire grammar easily.
For audiolingual, I will play a famous song among students, so they can listen and dictate as they have a jolly time.
Then students can communicate themselves with free talking. That way they wouldn't have a pressure of using English.

A reflection about what was discussed during class

Our group spent much time of talking about 'i+1'input but we all only thought of 2 common ideas. one is reading English books that are published for childeren like Penguin Publisher and the other is watching media with subtitles. In my English learning life these really helped me improve my English.   When i choose an english book first i see a sentence and find words that i donot understand. if i find more than 2 ~3 unfamiliar words i drop it and find another book. Also personally there are steps with watching media, at the very first i saw children's media like Sponge Bob and when i get used to this and understand i watched sitcoms such as Malcom in the Middle and Friends. Then I began to saw movies and soap dramas and still see them with subtitles.
