Mid term exam

Self efficacy is the most applicable to my future English learning and teaching. The reason is I have learned that it really effects on people’s learning ability. For example, we all know that children are growing and learning by parents’ praises when learning a first language. If parents do not give compliments to their children, their learning will be slow and not survival so it is really important for human to have self efficacy. Moreover, many famous and influential people had a speech about self efficacy, they look in a mirror and says ‘You can do it’ or  ‘You are beautiful’ and give themselves positive thoughts everyday. To give an example, Albert Bandura who is famously known in social learning theory as a canadian psychologist said ‘Self-belief does not necessarily ensure success, but self-disbelief assuredly spawns failure.’ I always try to have positive mind but it is really hard when I have low self efficacy. In my learning experiences, when I was in primary school I do not have good memories with teachers when it comes to study or school test results in Korea because I was not good at study and teachers were always angry or praise only intelligent students that made me a very introvert child. My Korean teachers were not kind and also were very scary and so at that time, I was blaming myself for bad test results and why I can not study well. Because my home education environment was not really focusing on study so I did not know how to or why I should study. But this year as I have been learning about education in TESOL, my school memories and my parents’ parenting memories were keep popping up and naturally I compared to my experiences. Then I was realized that it was stupid to blame myself when I was a primary student. I do not understand why scary people are becoming teachers especially in kindergartens and elementary schools, I know some students need punishment for good study environment but teachers who do not give students self efficacy but only give low self-esteem must not be a teacher. The reason I wanted to be teacher was one of this bad experience, I wanted to be a teacher who is kind and looks like a person who listens well to students and not ignore, gives self efficacy to my own students. I do not mean that every teachers have to be only nice and angelic, I just do not want children are getting hurt by their own teacher who should be a mentor and a second parent. Many people are finding their own inspired or good teacher from graduate schools after they are grown up and I really envy that because I don’t have a teacher to visit. If I become a teacher, I really want to help students to have positive thinking and self efficacy.

I definitely interested in learning more about  motivation, self efficacy and reducing affective filter in classroom during the second half of the certificate program. I want to learn how to motivate and make students participate themselves. Because only few fixed students are always participate, I want to see all students are participating enjoyably in classroom. So that when students have to present a speech or give presentation, they will not get nervous and reduce presentation anxiety. Then through that students are slowly getting confident themselves. Also I want to learn how to encourage students’ different learning styles without bothering others.
In Korea, learning grammar is essential, so I want to know how to teach grammar easily, Korean students memorize grammar and this memorize method is not good because they can not use differently especially in speaking. So without this, I want to know  grammar teaching method.

Are you carrying cash right now?

Are you carrying cash right now? In modern days, the variety  of non-cash payment methods is increasing and people are getting used to those methods. I do not deny that because we are living in a technology era however people better pay in cash because it helps shopkeeper's income, vitalizes an economy and your income.

Shop owners have trouble of earning profits because of card fees. Big companies like E-marts and GS supermarket, secure other income subtract from sales profit . However, private businesses are focusing on one business so they have one way of income. Therefore, people using credit cards can be a big burden to shop owners. Also because of card fees, shop owners hate credit cards, they make cash payment sale reduction. For example, in massage shops, it became a natural thing that there are two separate prices; one is cash payment price which is cheaper than the other credit card payment price.

Paying in cash vitalizes an economy. There is a saying that ‘ Cash has to be circulated’. If you look at people’s wallets on streets now, I am sure they do not have cash but only credit cards or they even do not carry wallets. For me, because I hate paying a small fee with a credit card, naturally I look for a bigger market rather than going to a small shop near me. Moreover,  you can register the cash receipt system which is receiving an income tax deduction at year-end tax adjustment in Korea. This can be of help to your income especially for the family income if you are a housewife struggling to saving money.

On the other hand, some people argue that using cash does have few drawbacks. People could lose cash, and if they forget a wallet they would pay more to get it. Also carrying a wallet could be a bit of a nuisance and heavy. For instance, at a beach, we hardly see any wallet among people who wear few clothes and bring not much with them. Even, in the future or very soon there are many articles and cases about a human microchip implant which contains informations such as personal identification, medical history, medications, allergies, and contact information.

Changing people’s habit of payment is not easy especially when they know conveniences of paying with credit cards. However, paying in cash definitely has many advantages - supporting  an economy, your earnings  and shopkeepers’ revenue notably in open markets . People should start to think of the reasons and consider paying in cash. Taking the first step is always the hardest.

A reflection about the Week#4 discussion about Motivation

Before I saw Dan Pink: The Puzzle of motivation video, I thought extrinsic motivations have more effects of people's lives than intrinsic motivations. The reason is people will be surely happy with the real outcomes or real rewards in their hands. However I was really surprised when the video showed two reversal outcomes of an experiment called The Candle Problem. So the video said often carrots and punishments method  doesnot work that the carrots block the creavities.

When I am on my deathbed, I want to able to say that my life was unregretful, I fully enjoyed my life time, I freely colorfully lived my life.  I so envy when I see or read books or articles about people living nonpossessive life and just travel. I now know that those people are really brave and great. For just a year, I want to live like them.

What's Your Learning Style?

My Scores:
  • Auditory: 35%
  • Visual: 40%
  • Tactile: 25%
I am a Visual learner!

Visual

If you are a visual learner, you learn by reading or seeing pictures. You understand and remember things by sight. You can picture what you are learning in your head, and you learn best by using methods that are primarily visual. You like to see what you are learning.
As a visual learner, you are usually neat and clean. You often close your eyes to visualize or remember something, and you will find something to watch if you become bored. You may have difficulty with spoken directions and may be easily distracted by sounds. You are attracted to color and to spoken language (like stories) that is rich in imagery.
Here are some things that visual learners like you can do to learn better:
  • Sit near the front of the classroom. (It won't mean you're the teacher's pet!)
  • Have your eyesight checked on a regular basis.
  • Use flashcards to learn new words.
  • Try to visualize things that you hear or things that are read to you.
  • Write down key words, ideas, or instructions.
  • Draw pictures to help explain new concepts and then explain the pictures.
  • Color code things.
  • Avoid distractions during study times.
Remember that you need to see things, not just hear things, to learn well.
